Mary and Jerry Blakely Global Friendship Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Baihua Wu, alongside her family foundation, to honor the enduring legacy and profound cross-cultural generosity of Dr. Mary Blakely (1945-2001) and Jerry Blakely (1943-2013). In 1985, Dr. Mary Blakely traveled to China as a dedicated educator, bringing her PhD expertise to focus on minority education, linguistics and cross-cultural communication, while her husband, Jerry, supported her mission from Oregon.
Known for their open doors and welcoming hearts, the Blakelys changed the trajectory of international students’ lives, including providing vital emotional and financial sponsorship to help the founder of this scholarship navigate her own journey at the University of Arizona. By supporting students with financial need who are dedicated to cross-cultural exchange, this fund ensures that Mary and Jerry's pure spirit of global mentorship, open-door hospitality, and belief in the power of international scholars will live on at the University of Arizona campus forever.
