In 2021, the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona opened the 2,131-square-foot Alice Chaiten Baker Interdisciplinary Gallery, the center’s first on-site gallery expansion in over two decades. With more space came the need for more resources, and this year the CCP received an anonymous $1 million gift establishing an endowment to support interdisciplinary exhibitions and programming in the new gallery.

“Having this endowment behind the efforts of the Baker Gallery is just so critical in enabling us to do that work that we want to do: to reach across campus and create intentional partnerships with colleagues that really integrate photography in an interdisciplinary way,” says Todd J. Tubutis, CCP director.

Recent collaborative exhibitions in the Baker Gallery include partnerships with the Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research, the photojournalism program and the Poetry Center. Tubutis emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary programming in our image-saturated world and the need for visual literacy in many disciplines.

“I think this gift underscores the importance of the CCP being on a campus, and that we are integrated with what faculty, students and staff are doing on a day-to-day basis. The CCP isn’t just for art students or art history students. We’re trying to reach everybody, and this gift recognizes that.”
