In late October, the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy hosted its National Advisory Board as well as celebrated Homecoming. It was a festive and fun few days where we brought together students, alumni, faculty and staff to network and re-engage with us.

A highlight of the festivities was Dean Rick Schnellmann surprising Glenn Sipes with the news that the College has established an award in his honor, the Glenn Sipes Graduate Student Travel Award. Led by the Dean and PhD alumni colleague Tom Petry, PhD, this gift was made possible by a handful of graduate students who were advised by him while at the University. The Award has received $24,565 through mid-November and the College is still working to grow this gift with support from generous friends and alumni.

From this fund, the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology will provide awards that will enable and encourage its graduate students to advance their research by participating in scientific meetings. Travel to conferences and scientific meetings remains an important aspect of graduate education where students network with fellow scientists and researchers. We want to continue encouraging students to participate but hope to reduce the burden of costs associated with travel.

Dr. Sipes was an incredible scientist and leader. He was accessible and approachable and was committed to teaching graduate students about thriving in academia.
