For the last six years, Dr. Michael Bogan and his team of student ecologists have been working to restore and protect the biodiversity of our Santa Cruz Watershed.

Through partnerships with city planners to ensure the continued flow of reclaimed water, they’re protecting the plants and animals that need this water – including six species of amphibians, 46 species of dragonflies, and over 120 bird species. They’ve also reintroduced native animals that were once gone, like the endangered Gila topminnow, and they’ve made our Santa Cruz a huge point of local pride.

These ecosystems are what make Southern Arizona such a special place to live in and learn in, and they’re essential for keeping our region’s tourism economy strong. To preserve them, we must have experts like Dr. Bogan dedicated to this work. With community support, Dr. Bogan and his students can restore more plants and animals to our Santa Cruz, and they can reintroduce other native species like Sonoran mud turtles, lowland leopard frogs, and Mexican garter snakes.
