Expanding Our View

When an anonymous donor made a transformational $20 million commitment during Giving Day 2026, the impact was extraordinary. The donor inspired a wave of Wildcat generosity that raised an additional $5 million for academic priorities — while establishing the University of Arizona’s first Presidential Strategic Leadership Fund. The fund is an enduring, unrestricted resource that will empower university presidents to advance strategic research priorities, support faculty-led initiatives and emerging fields of discovery, and develop the talent and infrastructure that will define the university’s future. We sat down with President Suresh Garimella to better understand what this landmark act of vision and generosity means for the university’s future.
From your perspective, what made an unrestricted endowment the right structure for a gift this significant? Why not endowed faculty or leadership positions?
This was entirely the donor’s vision. They recognized that — unlike many of our peer institutions — the U of A has not had a true unrestricted fund. That insight and the generosity to act on it is remarkable. Endowed faculty and leadership positions are important to the university and its future, and we are always grateful for those investments. They are vital tools for attracting and retaining top faculty, who will in turn train and inspire our students to become leaders in their fields.
This donor saw something beyond that, which is the need for flexibility at the institutional level to respond to evolving priorities and uncertainties in funding. An unrestricted endowment gives the U of A access to something like venture capital or a strategic reserve that can be deployed for the right needs of the time, like the bold research priorities that will define our next chapter.
It sounds like flexibility is a critical need.
Yes, absolutely. An unrestricted fund can advance priorities and allow us to invest in promising ideas with great potential for impact. Consider the promise of fusion energy. Scientists achieved a landmark breakthrough in 2022, and the race to commercialize that discovery is now intensifying globally. The University of Arizona is uniquely positioned to play a critical role in that race by applying our strengths in optical science, high-power lasers and engineering to solve the commercialization challenges that stand between the laboratory and the power grid. This kind of targeted, interdisciplinary effort is a prime example of what this fund could accelerate.
The anonymous donor was motivated by a desire to build on the impact of the university’s research. What are other examples of how funding can be used to advance the research mission?
The Big Idea Challenge is a perfect example of what becomes possible when you invest in bold, convergent thinking. From 72 proposals representing 19 units across campus, six teams were selected to pursue research with the potential to change lives. Convergent Digital Health for Remote Access, or CoDiRA, is deploying AI-powered medical kiosks to provide quality care to rural and underserved communities. A patient’s ZIP code should not determine their health outcomes. Or consider the Arizona Space Cloud Infrastructure project, AZSCI, which pioneers the computing infrastructure needed to power the next generation of space-based applications and exploration. That team is building the foundation for data processing and discovery beyond Earth, with potential benefits for national security, sustainability and the future of computing.
These are the kinds of ambitious, cross-disciplinary initiatives that can put the University of Arizona at the forefront of solving the challenges that matter most to our society. The Presidential Strategic Leadership Fund has the potential to multiply every dollar invested. When we can demonstrate institutional commitment to a project, we become eligible for federal, state and foundation investments that require matching funds. We can strengthen our position for major proposals and give our most promising researchers the runway they need to attract the partners and investors who can take their work to scale. That is the power of this kind of unrestricted giving.
Any final thoughts on what you hope to accomplish with the Presidential Strategic Leadership Fund?
I am honored by the trust the donor has placed in our university mission and strategic vision, and I am grateful that this generosity will allow us to accelerate the impact of our faculty research and academic enterprise. I hope the donor will watch with pride in the years to come as the university continues to build momentum in our world-leading strategic research initiatives.
